Govt steps up extreme weather mitigation for year-end travel

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation is stepping up measures to tackle potential extreme weather ahead of the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year travel period through cross-agency coordination and risk mitigation across the national transport network.

"Weather information and route conditions must factor into operational decision-making, particularly when preparing for extreme weather and disaster-prone areas," Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said in a statement confirmed on Tuesday.

He said the Ministry of Transportation is strengthening coordination with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), local governments, and infrastructure operators to mitigate travel disruptions triggered by extreme weather during the year-end holiday rush.

Precautionary measures taken include mapping out flood- and landslide-prone areas to support operational decisions and ensure smooth public mobility during the holiday period.

The government is also taking steps to mitigate potential high waves and strong winds that could affect safety across maritime services and other transport modes.

Beyond weather mitigation, the Ministry of Transportation is identifying alternative routes to ensure passenger movement remains safe and controlled if travel disruptions occur.

Equipment readiness and field personnel deployment in areas vulnerable to extreme weather are also being strengthened to enable fast, accurate, and well-coordinated emergency responses.

Evaluations from previous year-end travel operations are also being used to enhance mitigation strategies and readiness for potential weather- and environment-related disruptions.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation is requesting transport operators to prepare operational plans that outline risk management, emergency response readiness, and contingency measures for real-time changes on the ground.

Through cross-sector coordination and stronger extreme weather mitigation, the ministry aims to ensure safe, secure, and reliable travel services for the public during the year-end holiday period.
