Who is the new owner of Chelsea?

Translate

Here is the latest update on who the new owner of Chelsea Football Club is following the departure of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter.

In the early hours of today, an official statement confirming the exit of former co-owner of Chelsea Todd Boehly, was released and here is an update on who the owner of the club is.

Chelsea have entered a new chapter in their ownership after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter agreed to sell their stakes, handing full control of the Premier League club to Clearlake Capital.

The change brings an end to Boehly’s four-year spell as Chelsea chairman and leaves Clearlake, the American investment firm co-founded by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, firmly in control at Stamford Bridge.

But who exactly are Chelsea’s new controlling owners, and what changes with Boehly’s departure?

Clearlake Capital Group is now the controlling force at Chelsea after agreeing to acquire the ownership interests held by Boehly and Walter.

Clearlake is not actually new to the club. The private equity firm was part of the consortium that purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 and has been the club’s majority shareholder since the takeover.

Before the latest transaction, Clearlake held a 61.5 per cent stake in Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss held minority interests.

Chelsea have confirmed that Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group following the transition.

Who are Behdad Eghbali and José Feliciano?

Clearlake Capital was founded in 2006 by Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, who have become two of the most important figures behind Chelsea's ownership.

The California-based investment firm manages investments across several industries, including technology, industrials and consumer businesses.

Eghbali, in particular, has become a prominent figure around Chelsea since the 2022 takeover and has been heavily involved in the club's operations.

With Boehly stepping away, Clearlake's move to full control removes the joint-governance arrangement that had existed since the takeover.

Boehly became the public face of the consortium that purchased Chelsea in 2022 and took over as chairman following Abramovich's departure.

However, reports of differences between Boehly and Clearlake over aspects of Chelsea's direction emerged during their four years together.

One major issue facing the ownership group has been the future of Stamford Bridge. Boehly acknowledged in 2025 that the owners needed to reach an agreement over the club's long-term stadium plans and suggested they could ultimately go their separate ways if their visions did not align.

Boehly has now sold his interest and stepped down as chairman.

Reflecting on his departure, the American businessman described serving as Chelsea chairman as an honour and expressed confidence in the club's future under Clearlake.

Clearlake has been Chelsea's majority shareholder since 2022, but Boehly's departure means the investment firm now has full control of a club it has helped run for the past four years.
