EUROMATCH-NPFL: Enyimba Set To Equal Unwanted 27-Year Record Ahead Sporting Lagos Clash

Enyimba are on the verge of equalling an unwanted club record – failing to win their first four opening league games of a season.

The Aba Elephant have endured a nightmare start to the 2025/26 EUROMATCH-NPFL Nigeria Premier Football League season, losing all three opening fixtures – against Niger Tornadoes, Doma United and newly promoted Inter Lagos in Aba.

The run leaves the league giants as the only team yet to pick up a point in the NPFL this season, rooted to the bottom of the table.

Should Enyimba fail to win their next league game against Sporting Lagos on Wednesday at the Enyimba International Stadium, they will equal a feat last recorded in 1999 – when the club also failed to win any of its first four matches of the season.

That 1999 season is still remembered as one of the worst starts in the club’s history before the Aba giants transformed into the dominant force in Nigerian football, winning their first league title in 2001 and back-to-back CAF Champions League crowns in 2003 and 2004.

The current slump has already sparked concern among fans, forcing Chairman Nwankwo Kanu to issue a public appeal on Tuesday urging supporters to stay behind the team.

“Hard times are not forever, they come and go. We understand the weight of the disappointing losses and we are determined to make things right,” Kanu said in a statement.

Enyimba will now look to Wednesday’s home clash against Sporting Lagos as a chance to avoid the record books for the wrong reasons and commence their season.
