A Show Cause Order (SCO) against an allegedly drunk pickup driver for hitting parked motorcycles, continued driving for several meters before stopping, urinating in public, and claiming to fall asleep on the wheel, according to the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

The LTO conducted an investigation after receiving a video of the incident and found that the registered owner of the pickup truck was also the driver, and verified that the vehicle was last registered on July 28, 2020 and that there was no registration renewal on record.

Riders chase pickup truck

"Based on the accounts of the riders captured on video, several motorcycles were hit by a pickup truck while stopped at a traffic light at the J.P. Rizal Extension and Kalayaan Avenue area. Instead of stopping, the driver continued driving until the riders followed him from Guadalupe to C-5 Road," the LTO said in a statement.

"As the incident continued, the riders were seen trying to force the pickup truck to stop. One of the riders used his helmet to hit the vehicle as it continued moving. Later, it suddenly turned right without giving the proper signal before finally coming to a stop on the side of the road," it added.

The driver then claimed that the riders shot one of the tire of his vehicle. He proceeded to expose his private parts and urinated in front of the vehicle.

"When a traffic enforcer arrived, he apologized and admitted to falling asleep while driving," the agency said.

Violations

An SCO was issued in which the driver was ordered to appear before the Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) of the LTO Central Office for a hearing on October 13, 2026, submit a sworn statement, and explain why he should not be declared an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle, which could be grounds for the suspension or revocation of his driver's license.

The violations stated in the SCO, include Reckless Driving, Signals on Starting, Stopping or Turning for failure to give proper turn signals, Compulsory Registration of Motor Vehicles, for driving an unregistered vehicle, and Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol or Narcotic Drugs.

The driver was ordered to surrender his driver's license and be placed under a 90-day preventive suspension while the pickup truck has also been placed on alarm.

“The road is for everyone, so no one has the right to make it dangerous for others. Driving drunk, being irresponsible and rude is unacceptable on the road. We will ensure that drivers are held accountable for their violations," said Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao.

The LTO issued the following reminders to motorists:

  • be responsible drivers
  • practice discipline
  • ensure that they are in good condition before setting off
  • avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol or anything that may affect your ability to drive safely.

"The LTO thanks the public for their continued reporting and documentation of violations, which helps the agency to promptly take action on incidents that may endanger fellow motorists," the agency said. — BAP, GMA News
