Physical disaster recovery work in Aceh river basins reaches 92 pct

Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The Sumatra I River Basin Agency (BWS Sumatra I) informed that emergency disaster response efforts in Aceh's river basins have reached 92.06 percent completion and continue to show significant physical progress.

"To date, the progress of these efforts has reached 92.06 percent," the Head of BWS Sumatra 1, Asyari, stated on Friday.

He outlined the emergency response focused on restoring affected water resource infrastructure, including river and estuary cleaning and normalization, riverbank reinforcement, and silt removal from irrigation networks.

"These measures aim to restore river flow and irrigation network functions, mitigate the risk of secondary disasters, and support the recovery of activities for affected communities," Asyari added.

He mentioned that physical progress on emergency response in the river basin areas covering Pidie, Pidie Jaya, Bireuen, Bener Meriah, and Central Aceh districts has reached 87.79 percent.

Specific works included riverbank/embankment reinforcement (94.68 percent), river normalization and estuary dredging (78.03 percent), and irrigation area rehabilitation (85.84 percent).

Furthermore, physical progress in the North Aceh, East Aceh, and Aceh Tamiang regions has reached 91.04 percent.

This includes riverbank and embankment reinforcement (92.55 percent), river and irrigation channel normalization (84.74 percent), and the provision of clean water through borewells at 24 locations, which has been fully completed.

"The physical progress of the emergency response in West Aceh, Gayo Lues, and Southeast Aceh has reached 100 percent, with measures including riverbank and embankment reinforcement and river normalization," Asyari remarked.

Once the emergency response phase concludes, the agency will proceed to the rehabilitation and reconstruction stage, adopting a more comprehensive and sustainable approach.

The rehabilitation and reconstruction phase will cover the entire river basin, from upstream to downstream areas. The planned measures include constructing sabo dams in upstream areas, reinforcing riverbanks, and improving and managing river estuaries.

According to Asyari, these measures are expected to strengthen water resource infrastructure and reduce the risk of future disasters.

"We have planned this rehabilitation and reconstruction program to run for three years through 2028," he said.

He added that as the emergency response transitions to rehabilitation and reconstruction, BWS Sumatra I remains committed to restoring water resource infrastructure in Aceh in a phased, integrated, and sustainable manner.

"We hope these measures will not only restore damaged infrastructure but also strengthen river control and protection systems to improve safety for the people of Aceh," he concluded.
