MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon will continue to bring rain over Luzon on Monday, Aug. 17, the state weather bureau said.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical and Services Administration’s (Pagasa) latest weather forecast, the full effects of the monsoon are expected in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro.

Heavy periods of rainfall are also expected over Ilocos Norte, Batanes, Cagayan, Cordillera Administrative Region, Tarlac, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Cavite and Batangas.

“As for the rest of Luzon, we will experience scattered rain showers, all brought about by the southwest monsoon,” said Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda-Carpio.

The monsoon may cause scattered rain showers in Western Visayas, she added.

The rest of Visayas and Mindanao are forecast to experience partly cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers.

Pagasa also said it is currently monitoring two low-pressure areas outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

The first is located 1,387.5 km east of Central Luzon.

“It is also possible for this to develop into a full-fledged tropical cyclone in the coming days,” said Castañeda-Carpio, adding that it will be named “Nene” once it develops.

The other LPA is located 2,395 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon. This LPA is unlikely to develop into a storm and is already moving away from PAR.

However, another weather circulation is expected to form west of Northern Luzon and is currently being observed by the state weather bureau.
