NLO Cup adopts home-and-away format to guarantee clubs more matches

Translate

The Nationwide League One (NLO) has announced that its revamped NLO Cup will adopt a regional home-and-away league format designed to guarantee participating clubs more matches and improve players’ competitive exposure.

Under the new structure, the number of fixtures each team plays will depend on the total number of clubs in its zone. A team in a 10-club group, for instance, could play up to 18 matches, with the possibility of more fixtures in zones featuring additional teams.

The format represents a departure from a single-match knockout arrangement, offering clubs a more extensive schedule of competitive engagements.

The NLO Chief Operating Officer, Olushola Ogunnowo, said the new structure was designed to address the need for more playing opportunities while creating a more sustainable competitive environment for clubs.

“A key benefit of the new NLO Cup format is the guaranteed increase in match opportunities. Instead of a single knockout fixture, the league format provides a broader schedule of competitive games,” Mr Ogunnowo told the NLO media channel.

He said the expanded schedule would enable clubs to host more matches before their supporters, gain valuable experience from away fixtures, expose players to competitive football and strengthen their sporting and commercial prospects.

The league also expects the format to promote youth development, deepen fan engagement and strengthen the relationship between clubs and their host communities.

Shared venues to ease logistics

To reduce travel demands and logistical pressures, the NLO said multiple clubs would be permitted to host their home matches at the same venues, with fixtures scheduled on weekdays or weekends.

The arrangement is expected to make the competition more manageable for participating teams while ensuring a smoother fixture schedule.

Mr Ogunnowo said the revamped format would provide a more structured environment for clubs to develop their teams and establish stronger competitive identities.

“The revitalised NLO Cup advances a more structured and competitive environment for NLO clubs. With more fixtures, players can showcase their skills, coaches can improve teams, and clubs can enhance their competitive identity,” he said.

He added that the home-and-away arrangement would give players the experience of competing before home supporters while preparing them for the demands of away matches.

“The home-and-away format will motivate clubs to enjoy the excitement of playing in front of supporters and to tackle the challenges of away games,” he said.

Registration requirements

The NLO Cup is scheduled to kick off on 10 October 2026, with eligible clubs from NLO Division One and the NLO Youth League Under-19 required to pay a non-refundable registration fee of ₦1 million.

The league said the fee would cover tournament logistics, with payments to be made directly into its designated account with FCMB.

Participating clubs are required to submit proof of payment to the NLO Secretariat for verification and registration clearance.

The competition forms part of the NLO’s efforts to expand playing opportunities, improve talent development and create greater visibility for clubs and players within Nigeria’s lower-tier football structure.
