OPINION - Tories' Ewan Cameron slams 'spiteful mansion tax': There's no greater Conservative principle than home ownership

Translate

WEST END FINAL

Our last MP was the Prime Minister. Labour runs Camden Council. Labour runs City Hall. Look at what they have done with it.

Families have been priced out of our community.

School rolls are falling and primary schools are closing. Labour promised to fix the housing crisis but it has failed and now families are abandoning them.

I know this place. As Vice-Chair of Licensing on Camden Council, I built trust across the parties and earned a reputation for getting things done.

I helped master-plan King's Cross, turning a toxic industrial wasteland into a model of urban renewal.

We have the rail links to the North, the Knowledge Quarter and two world-leading universities.

But this is not a transport hub or a student dormitory, and it must never become an ideology laboratory. It is where we call home.

Now Labour wants to tax that home.

From April 2028, its High Value Council Tax Surcharge will add thousands of pounds a year on top of Council Tax.

This a spiteful tax on people who have worked hard to buy their own home.

The Conservatives will abolish it, and as Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras I will fight it every step of the way.

I will also vote to abolish Stamp Duty.

There is no greater Conservative principle than home ownership. It brings security, strengthens community and gives people a stake in their community.

I will vote for measures that deliver safer streets for everyone in Holborn and St Pancras and support Kemi Badenoch's commitment to recruit 10,000 more police.

Our streets belong to those who obey the law, not to bag-snatchers, brazen shoplifters and illegal e-scooter riders.

Unlike Labour who’s answer to everything is another tax, I will vote for tax cuts, so you keep more of what you earn.

I will vote to cut the levies piled onto your electricity bill, for more nuclear and against Labour's evangelical faith in wind and solar.

As cars, boilers and offices switch to electricity, bills must come down, not up.

And I will fight Labour's tax on jobs and vote to scrap business rates on the shops, pubs and hospitality that keep our high streets alive.

On Thursday, you have a choice.

Stick with a party that has taken you for granted, or elect a local champion who will turn up, speak up and stand up for you.

Vote Conservative, and together we will make our piece of London the best place to live, work, study and belong.

Ewan Cameron is the Conservative candidate in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election on Thursday, October 8.
