#SHOWBIZ: Cheng Lei can't wait for next visit to Malaysia

FOR Chinese actor Cheng Lei, his first visit to Malaysia was much more than a standard fan meeting. It was a chance to experience a country whose multicultural charm, incredible food, and warm reception left a truly lasting impression.

WARM WELCOME

The 32-year-old star and iQIYI global ambassador made his Malaysian debut at iQIYI STARSHIP 2026 in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The programme brings popular Chinese drama stars face-to-face with audiences through lively interactive events.

Known for his roles in 'How Dare You!?', 'Legend of the Female General', 'My Journey to You', and 'Shadow Love', Cheng has built a strong international following.

'How Dare You!?'— a time-travel drama blending politics, adventure and romance — was among the most-watched Chinese series globally on iQIYI early this year, topping the charts shortly after its release.

From his performance as Xiahou Dan (Zhang San) to playing three distinct roles in 'Shadow Love', Cheng demonstrated an impressive range that cements his status as one of C-drama's most versatile young talents.

Still, it was his genuine connection with local fans that truly stole the show.

At a Q&A session, Cheng admitted he was deeply moved by the crowd, especially when hearing fans switch effortlessly between Bahasa Malaysia and Mandari.

"I feel a real sense of closeness with Malaysian fans," he said.

CULINARY AND CULTURAL CHARM

That feeling of familiarity went beyond language. Cheng was particularly struck by Malaysia's rich multicultural landscape where Malay, Chinese, Indian and other communities thrive together, and, of course, the country's legendary food scene.

While he hoped to sample as many local delicacies as possible during his short trip, one dish topped his list.

"Nasi lemak is definitely my first choice because I've heard so much about it," he smiled.

The brief trip left him eager to see more of the country.

"I would love to have more time to explore Malaysia and experience what it has to offer."

His wish to return isn't just about holidays, either. When asked about international projects, Cheng revealed he would jump at the chance to shoot a film or drama locally.

"I'd love the opportunity to film in Malaysia, especially given how beautiful the scenery is."

EMBRACING NEW ROLES

This open-minded attitude mirrors his general approach to acting.

Rather than sticking to one genre, Cheng seeks fresh challenges.

To him, every new role is a chance to step into someone else's shoes.

"Every character feels like meeting a new friend and living a different life."

He also expressed deep gratitude for how his work bridges cultural divides.

"I feel very proud and grateful to be here in Malaysia to meet you all," he told the cheering crowd.

"I hope you take good care of yourselves, and that we can meet again soon."

That affection was mutual.

Dinesh Ratnam, iQIYI's senior director for Southeast Asia, said returning to Kuala Lumpur was an easy decision given the massive local appetite for Chinese dramas.

"The support from Malaysian fans is always amazing. Following our previous success, we're delighted to bring Cheng Lei closer to his local followers."

When asked what single memory or keepsake he would take back to China, Cheng found it impossible to pick just one.

"I want to capture Malaysia's gorgeous scenery through my camera, remember the amazing food, and bring home the warmth and enthusiasm I felt from everyone here."

With his latest drama, 'The Leading Star', newly wrapped and preparing for release, Cheng's career is moving at full speed.

This quick Malaysian stop serves as a poignant reminder just how far he has reached.

As Cheng put it, returning — perhaps with a camera in hand, a plate of nasi lemak nearby and a film set waiting— is an invitation he would gladly accept.
