Who is lawyer Lorna Patajo-Kapunan?

MANILA, Philippines — Veteran lawyer Lorna Patajo-Kapunan is among the private lawyers assisting the House prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Kapunan has drawn attention during the proceedings for her courtroom style and quick-witted remarks. She has led the prosecution’s examination of witnesses, at times prompting laughter from the otherwise serious impeachment court.

With 48 years of legal practice, Kapunan specializes in litigation, intellectual property, licensing, franchising, corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, international humanitarian law, criminal law, family law and estate law.

Kapunan also teaches family law, media and the client, and the Code of Responsibility for Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE).

Kapunan is an advocate for women’s and children’s rights, environmental protection and LGBTQ rights.

She has served as a senior associate at ACCRA Law Office and as senior partner at Rico Robles Kapunan Law. She also founded Kapunan & Castillo Law Offices, where she has been a senior partner since 2011.

Kapunan earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Bachelor of Laws degrees from the University of the Philippines.

She also completed courses and seminars in international humanitarian law, intellectual property and invention and innovation, including programs at Magdalene College, Cambridge University, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in San Remo, Italy, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Asian Region Seminar in Tajon, Republic of Korea.
