Two vigilantes killed, three injured in Plateau

At least two vigilantes were killed and three others injured when suspected gunmen attacked their duty post at Mangor in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, residents said.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 11 p.m. at Angwan Tsarki, a settlement in Mangor, while the vigilantes were on duty.
A resident, Bitrus Simon, told journalists that the attackers opened fire on the vigilantes, killing two and injuring three others.
Mr Simon called for improved security measures to protect residents of the area.
The reported attack occurred as the Plateau State Police Command said it had launched an investigation into a separate shooting along the Bukuru Expressway in Jos South Local Government Area.
In a statement on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday when a vehicle conveying traders returning from Kara Market, Bukuru, was targeted.
Mr Alabo, a superintendent of police, said seven injured victims had so far been traced to the Military Clinic, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, where they were receiving medical treatment.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigations to take full charge of the case and ensure the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
“The Command strongly condemns this dastardly act and wishes the injured victims quick recovery,” the statement said.
The police said tactical and anti-robbery teams had been deployed to strengthen security around the area, while intelligence gathering had been intensified to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The command urged residents to continue with their lawful activities and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not publicly confirmed the reported Mangor attack. Efforts to reach security officials for confirmation were unsuccessful.
