SC bar association to file contempt plea against Kerala Congress for CJI post

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Tuesday decided to file a petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Kerala Congress for its social media post (which was later deleted) asking CJI Surya Kant to quit for iterating the constitutional mandate that law and order does not lie in the domain of judiciary.SCBA chief Pradeep Rai said the process of drafting the plea is continuing and would be sent to attorney general R Venkataramani seeking his consent for its filing in court.Contemporaneously, Mamata TMC MP Mahua Moitra sarcastically misspelt the CJI's name and posted on X, "Surya clearly can't, So we will." It immediately drew an official response from Mamata TMC, distancing itself from her post.SCBA and SCAORA condemned Kerala Congress. SC Women Lawyers Association, led by advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, said, "Any deliberate attempt to demean, discredit or undermine the institution, or to erode public confidence in it through irresponsible, intemperate or unwarranted remarks, is a matter of concern.""The freedom to express disagreement does not absolve anyone of the responsibility to exercise restraint, fairness and respect when speaking about constitutional offices and institutions," it said.
