Bush fire reported along Voi-Taveta Road as teams move to contain spread

NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 7 – A bush fire has broken out along the Voi-Taveta Road in Taita-Taveta County, prompting a joint response by the Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the county fire brigade.

The Kenya Red Cross said its teams, together with KWS and county firefighters, remained on the ground to contain the fire and safeguard residents living near the affected area.

The agency also clarified earlier reports that had described the incident as a tanker fire, saying ground teams had since established that the incident involved a bush fire, rather than a tanker blaze.

“Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Wildlife Service and the County fire brigade remain on the ground working to contain a bush fire along the Voi-Taveta Road and keep nearby residents safe,” the Red Cross said.

The agency said further information would be issued as the situation develops.

The incident comes as authorities continue to grapple with the threat posed by vegetation fires in the wider Tsavo landscape, an expansive semi-arid ecosystem that covers parts of Taita-Taveta and neighbouring counties.

Kenya Wildlife Service has identified fire as one of the threats affecting wildlife habitats, particularly in areas such as Tsavo. Historical KWS records show that fires have previously affected large areas of vegetation in protected areas, while its Tsavo management plans have documented fires occurring along major roads and railway lines.

Tsavo is particularly vulnerable because of its vast stretches of grassland and bushland, which can become highly combustible during dry conditions. The wider Tsavo ecosystem covers about 49,611 square kilometres and supports large populations of elephants, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes and other wildlife.

Recent conservation efforts have increasingly focused on fire management. KWS says that between 2022 and 2025 it strengthened fire and water management in several ecosystems and established 1,160 kilometres of firebreaks, including measures targeting the Tsavo landscape.

Bush fires can threaten both wildlife and communities, destroying vegetation, reducing available forage and forcing animals to move away from affected habitats. In severe cases, fires can also cross roads and reach settlements, farms and other infrastructure.

The exact cause, size of the affected area and extent of damage from the latest fire along the Voi-Taveta Road has not been established.

Authorities were expected to provide further updates after assessing the situation on the ground.
