Coach Rulani Mokwena flying high in Egypt

Mokwena clinched a 100% winning record with a 3-2 win over Al Qanah in the Egypt League Cup on Wednesday night.
Since moving to Cairo in July, the 39-year-old coach from Soweto has now won all eight of his official matches at Pyramids FC. During that run, the team has found the net 19 times, kept five clean sheets and conceded only four goals.
RULANI MOKWENA MAKES A STATEMENT IN EGYPT WITH PYRAMIDS FC
Flying high at the top of the Egyptian Premier League above giants Al Ahly and Zamalek, Pyramids have collected 15 points from 15.
Mokwena began his league campaign with a 3-0 away victory over Ghazl El Mahalla before defeating Abou Qir Fertilizers 2-0.
They then claimed a narrow 1-0 away victory over Al Masry before recording another 1-0 win at home against El Gouna. Their fifth league victory came against Eastern Enppi, with Pyramids winning 2-1 away from home.
Mokwena was duly crowned the EPFA Coach of the Month for August 2026.
The form translated to the continent. Pyramids dazzled in the CAF Champions League, blowing away Kenyan side Gor Mahia 7-1 on aggregate. They won the first leg 2-0 away before completing the job with a dominant 5-1 victory in the return leg.
WHAT’S NEXT?
There could also be an interesting South African storyline waiting for Mokwena in the CAF Champions League. As Pyramids progress through the competition, the Egyptian giants could potentially come up against Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates, giving the former Sundowns coach a possible reunion with South African opposition on the continental stage.
Meanwhile, Pyramids return to Egyptian Premier League action on 12 October, when they host Ceramica Cleopatra FC. Their focus then turns to the CAF Champions League second qualifying round, with a two-legged tie against South Sudanese side El Merreikh FC Bentiu. They travel for the first leg on 16/17 October, before hosting the return leg on 24 October.
Sandwiched between those continental fixtures is another league trip to face Tala’ea El Gaish SC on 20 October. Pyramids will then round off a busy month at home against Wadi Degla SC on 29 October.
