Police have confirmed that the six-year-old boy who was found unconscious in a retention pond near Taman Sungai Mas in Kulai yesterday died from drowning.

Kulai district police chief Tan Seng Lee said the boy was believed to have gone fishing at the pond, located about 50m from his home.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s parents left for work at about 6.30am while the boy and his 17-year-old sister were still asleep.

“At about 10am, an acquaintance told the victim’s mother that her son had been found unconscious in the pond,” he said in a statement today.

Tan said a fishing rod was also found near the scene.

He said the boy was pronounced dead at 11.15am by a medical officer from Kulai Hospital after firefighters retrieved him from the pond.

Tan said a post-mortem examination confirmed drowning as the cause of death.

Police found no signs of foul play at the scene and have classified the case as sudden death, with investigations ongoing.

Tan urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children and ensure that they do not engage in activities near ponds, rivers or other potentially dangerous bodies of water without adult supervision.
