Russia vs Nigeria: Six players who could force their way into Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles plans

Translate

For Eric Chelle, Nigeria’s trip to Russia is about more than simply filling an international window.

The Super Eagles head coach has deliberately separated his squad for the September Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers from the group selected for Tuesday’s friendly against Russia, creating a rare opportunity for several players still fighting to establish themselves in his plans.

Nigeria will face Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on 6 October, just days after the disappointment of a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second 2027 AFCON qualifying fixture.

While the result in Bissau has increased the pressure around the Super Eagles’ competitive campaign, the Russia fixture presents a completely different challenge for Chelle.

The Franco-Malian coach has retained some experienced players, including Moses Simon, Stanley Nwabali and Akor Adams, but the squad also contains many players yet to establish themselves at senior international level. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that several players will enter the senior camp for the first time.

For some of those players, the trip to Nizhny Novgorod could be the difference between being a name on the fringes of the national team and becoming a regular part of Chelle’s plans.

PREMIUM TIMES take a look at six players who have particularly strong reasons to view the Russia friendly as an audition.

Kelechi Iheanacho: A veteran with something to prove

Few players in the squad arrive with a louder recent club statement than Kelechi Iheanacho.

Iheanacho at 29, is hardly an unknown quantity to Nigerian football. He has played at the highest level in England and Spain, won major honours and accumulated years of international experience.

Yet his place in the current Super Eagles picture has become less certain. His last appearance for Nigeria came in the 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica, while he was left out of Chelle’s squad for the 2025 AFCON and had not featured in the Super Eagles’ matches in 2026 before receiving the Russia invitation.

What has changed is his form in Turkey; Iheanacho has been in spectacular scoring form for Bursaspor, finding the net in each of his first eight league appearances and reaching 11 goals, while also providing two assists. His latest brace helped Bursaspor beat Batman Petrolspor 2-1 away from home.

That run has completely changed the conversation around his international prospects; he simply cannot be ignored nor overlooked anymore.

The Russia fixture now offers Iheanacho the opportunity to demonstrate that his goalscoring resurgence is not confined to the Turkish second tier.

More importantly, a convincing performance could give Chelle another experienced attacking option at a time when Nigeria’s forward line remains heavily dependent on a small group of established players.

For Iheanacho, this is not simply a comeback, it is an opportunity to make Chelle reconsider where he fits into the Super Eagles’ attacking hierarchy.

Victory Akpe: The 20-year-old Defender knocking on the door

At just 20, Victory Akpe represents precisely the type of player Chelle appears keen to examine more closely.

The towering centre-back, who stands at around 1.95m, has already established himself as a regular for Swiss giants FC Basel after moving from Hungarian side Zalaegerszegi.

Akpe has started all seven of Basel’s Swiss Super League matches this season, accumulating 630 minutes, with one goal and one assist.

His development is particularly interesting for a Nigeria side entering another phase of defensive transition.

The Super Eagles have seen several experienced defenders move out of the immediate picture in recent years, increasing the need to identify players who can eventually carry responsibility at the back.

Akpe’s physical presence is obvious, but the Russia game will provide a better indication of whether he can translate his club form into the demands of international football.

A composed performance against a senior Russian side would give Chelle another option to consider alongside the more established defenders in his group.

For a player making his first senior international steps, that could be a significant opening.

Isaac James: The versatile option Chelle could exploit

Isaac James has already done enough at club level to suggest that his Super Eagles opportunity is not based solely on potential.

The Alverca player featured in all seven Primeira Liga matches before the September international break, accumulating 604 minutes and registering two assists.

His versatility makes his invitation even more intriguing as James can operate across defensive and midfield positions, giving Chelle another player capable of providing tactical flexibility.

Despite being part of the squad for the September qualifiers, he did not get onto the pitch against either Madagascar or Guinea-Bissau, that makes Russia particularly important.

The 22-year-old could finally make his senior debut and show whether the qualities that have earned him regular football in Portugal can also translate into the Super Eagles environment.

With Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi among the established options on the left side, James faces a difficult battle for recognition. But international football can change the picture quickly.

One strong performance could turn him from an unused squad member into a genuine alternative for Chelle.

Umar Abubakar: From 21 Goals at Jong Gent to the Super Eagles

Umar Abubakar’s journey to the Super Eagles is one of the more interesting development stories in Chelle’s latest squad.

The 20-year-old striker made his name with Jong Gent, where he scored 21 goals in 27 matches during his loan spell before securing a move to Portuguese top-flight club Famalicão.

That scoring record was enough to convince Famalicão to invest in his development, and his progress has now taken him into the senior Nigeria setup.

Abubakar was previously part of Nigeria’s youth system, and his latest invitation represents another step in a career that has moved quickly from grassroots football to European senior competition.

His challenge is obvious; the Super Eagles already possess established attacking options, meaning simply being included in the squad will not be enough.

Russia gives Abubakar the stage to show whether the instincts that produced 21 goals in Belgium can survive against senior international opposition and if he gets minutes, his movement, physicality and finishing will be closely watched.

For a young striker attempting to move from the development category into the senior picture, this is exactly the kind of opportunity that can accelerate a career.

Abdullahi Umar: Another young Striker looking to breakthrough

Abdullahi Umar is another emerging forward whose invitation tells us something about Chelle’s interest in expanding Nigeria’s attacking pool.

The 19-year-old Hradec Králové striker made a significant impression at Under-19 level, scoring 25 goals before progressing into senior football in the Czech Republic.

His European campaign has already provided another glimpse of his potential as Umar scored twice in Hradec Králové’s Conference League qualifying draw against Panathinaikos in August, demonstrating that he can make an impact against experienced opposition.

His transition into senior football has so far involved limited minutes, but that is precisely why the Russia fixture matters as Chelle does not necessarily need Umar to arrive as a finished product.

He needs to see whether the teenager possesses the movement, confidence and attacking instincts to eventually become part of the senior setup.

A first appearance for Nigeria could therefore be less about immediate competition for a starting position and more about establishing that Umar belongs in the conversation.

Chibuzo Nwoko: The Midfield prospect who chose Nigeria

Then there is Chibuzo “Chibby” Nwoko, a player whose invitation carries significance beyond his club development.

The 20-year-old Fulham midfielder previously represented England at Under-18 level before accepting his first senior invitation from Nigeria for the Russia friendly.

Nwoko has developed through the English football system and has featured for Fulham’s youth side this season, while also making his senior debut for the London club in the Carabao Cup.

His versatility could make him particularly attractive to Chelle as Nwoko can operate as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder or further forward, offering the kind of flexibility that can be useful in a squad undergoing transition.

His opportunity is also significant because Nigeria’s midfield already has an established reference point in Alex Iwobi, alongside players such as Ndidi and Raphael Onyedika.

Rather than immediately trying to displace any of them, Nwoko can use the Russia game to show that he can operate within that environment and eventually provide another option.

For a player who has chosen to commit his senior international future to Nigeria, making a strong first impression could be the beginning of something much bigger.

Russia is more than a Friendly for Chelle’s new faces

Chelle’s decision to name separate squads for the AFCON qualifiers and Russia has given the friendly a very different character.

The competitive campaign remains the immediate priority, particularly after the 3-0 defeat in Guinea-Bissau, but the Russia trip gives the coach valuable room to look beyond the players who currently occupy the first-choice positions.

The NFF’s 24-man squad contains a blend of established internationals and players receiving their first senior opportunity, making the fixture an important assessment exercise.

For Iheanacho, it is a chance to turn a remarkable club scoring run into an international revival while for Akpe and James, it is an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s defensive options.

For Abubakar and Umar, it is a test of whether their goalscoring development can survive the jump to senior international football. And for Nwoko, it is the first step after choosing Nigeria over England at senior level.

The Russia game may carry no AFCON points, but for these players, there is plenty at stake.

A strong performance in Nizhny Novgorod could transform a call-up into something considerably more valuable: a place in Eric Chelle’s long-term Super Eagles plans.

The question remains, can they do enough to force their way in?
