Green industry shift creates new economic opportunities, minister says

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Industry Muhammad Sarmuji said the transformation toward green industry could open new economic opportunities for national industry through energy efficiency, emission reduction, and carbon trading, while strengthening competitiveness in global markets.
"The transformation toward green industry is not merely an environmental obligation, but a new economic opportunity," Sarmuji said in a statement confirmed here on Friday.
Through the integration of green economy principles and carbon trading, he added, industries that succeed in improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions could convert those emission reductions into value-added commodities in the carbon market.
According to Sarmuji, this will drive efficiency while strengthening the competitiveness of national industry at the global level.
To support the transformation, the government not only sets regulations, but also provides assistance and technical guidance to industry players; so they could meet requirements and apply green industry principles in their production processes.
Besides promoting green industry, the ministry stated it is strengthening national industrial competitiveness through standardization and certification. Both instruments play an important role in ensuring that products on the market meet quality standards.
"The ministry encourages products on the market to have high quality standards. This is important considering that the manufacturing industry sector has a vital role in driving national economic growth," Sarmuji stated.
As of September 2026, the Ministry has supervised 45 Indonesian National Standards (SNI), up from 28 SNI the previous year. Supervision of brands also increased to 78 brands, from 73 brands the previous year.
The ministry has planned to supervise six SNI and nine brands in October to November 2026.
Head of the Ministry's Standardization and Industrial Services Policy Agency Emmy Suryandari explained standardization supervision is part of government efforts to ensure that marketed products conform to established standards.
According to her, SNI implementation ensures that every product on the domestic market, whether locally made or imported, meets the same quality standards.
On the other hand, the government continues to provide ease of SNI implementation for domestic products.
However, the implementation of mandatory SNI still faces several challenges. Of a total of 5,552 industrial SNI, only 131 SNI, or around 2.4 percent, have been designated as mandatory SNI.
