‘Smilla’s Sense Of Snow’ Series Settles At AMC+

AMC+ has picked up drama series Smilla’s Sense of Snow. The dystopian thriller will play on the streaming service in the U.S. and Canada.

A new adaptation of Peter Høeg’s bestseller, the series stars Filippa Coster-Waldau, Elyas M’Barek and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. It is directed by BAFTA winner Amma Asante (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Smilla’s Sense of Snow is set in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2040. It is a near-future surveillance state, which is under threat from an impending energy crisis.

Per the synopsis, Smilla is alone and leads a withdrawn life until she meets a young Inuit boy who finds a way to her heart. When the boy suddenly dies in mysterious circumstances, Smilla’s search for answers leads her to Greenland and to the center of dangerous political power games.

Asante and Clive Bradley (Trapped) are behind the series adaptation. The book also inspired a 1997 movie adaptation of the same name, starring Julia Ormond and directed by Bille August.

The show is a large-scale European coproduction. It was produced by Germany-based Constatin Film, which is behind the Resident Evil films, with Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film and Baltic Film Services. It received backing from the European Union and film funds in Germany, Finland and Lithuania.

Amanda Collin, Morten Suurballe, Silver Wolfe, Set Sjöstrand and Alexandre Willaume also feature in the drama series. The show is distributed internationally by ITV Studios, which cut the AMC+ deal. No exact North American launch date has been set for the series, but it is expected to bow on the streamer this fall.
