Japan’s Digital Agency says personal information possibly leaked

Japan’s Digital Agency said Friday that about 246,000 sets of personal information, including the names and addresses of government employees, may have been leaked due to unauthorized access to a network system operated by the agency.

So far, no secondary damage, such as the misuse of the possibly leaked personal information, has been confirmed.

The information also included email addresses and phone numbers, but not My Number personal identification numbers or bank account information.

On June 25, the agency detected suspicious access to a large number of files on the server from an account of system maintenance and operation staff. It then began investigating the incident and found on July 9 that there had been unauthorized access from an external third party.

The agency said in a statement that it is deeply sorry for causing problems and anxiety to those concerned.
