Tourism grows more resilient in Prabowo-Gibran's two years: Minister

Indonesia’s tourism sector has grown more resilient during President Prabowo Subianto’s first two years in office, with visitor numbers and spending rising, the Tourism Ministry said.
“Tourism has continued to grow over the past two years. 2025 was a key year, and that momentum is continuing into 2026,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in a statement that ANTARA received here Tuesday.
In 2025, Indonesia recorded 15.39 million foreign tourist visits, up 10.8 percent from 2024 and above its 14 million to 15 million target. Domestic trips reached a record 1.2 billion.
Through August 2026, foreign tourist visits totaled 10.58 million, up 5.38 percent year-on-year, while domestic trips reached 842.15 million, an increase of 4.29 percent.
“Indonesia’s tourism growth is the second-fastest among the five major Southeast Asian economies,” Widiyanti said.
Average spending by foreign visitors rose 6.36 percent in the first half of 2026 to US$1,313 (about Rp22.59 million) per visit.
Visitors spend on accommodation, food and drinks, souvenirs, entertainment and local tour packages. More than 95 percent of businesses in the tourism sector are micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The 2026 Global Muslim Travel Index ranked Indonesia joint second worldwide for Muslim-friendly tourism, alongside Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.
Indonesia’s Travel and Tourism Development Index score rose to 4.56, placing it 23rd globally, second in Southeast Asia and sixth in Asia-Pacific.
Widiyanti said Indonesia received 311 international tourism awards from 2025 through September 2026, reflecting global recognition of the sector’s resilience and quality.
Honors included Tripadvisor naming Bali a “Best of the Best” destination for 2026, alongside awards for cuisine, hotels and natural attractions such as the Komodo Islands and Gili Trawangan.
The 2026 MICHELIN Guide selection awarded MICHELIN Keys to 47 hotels in Indonesia, recognizing excellence in hospitality.
That was up from 33 Indonesian hotels in the 2025 selection, signaling wider international recognition of the country’s hospitality standards and competitiveness.
