A colourful animated musical adventure, Trolls World Tour follows Queen Poppy and Branch as they learn about other Troll tribes beyond their own, each devoted to a different style of music, and race to stop rock-loving Queen Barb from taking over them all. Featuring the voices of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake and Rachel Bloom, this energetic sequel to Trolls is packed with catchy songs, vibrant animation and a message about celebrating diversity.
A thoughtful neo-western drama from writer-director Max Walker-Silverman, Rebuilding stars Josh O’Connor as a cowboy whose life is upended by wildfire, forcing him to find strength in community while reconnecting with his ex-wife and daughter. The acclaimed Sundance film is a moving story of resilience, loss and fresh starts.
Available to stream is The Social Network, the 2010 masterpiece that traces the back-stabbing behind the formation of Facebook in the early 2000s. Jesse Eisenberg is the prickly Mark Zuckerberg, who takes a simple idea and runs with it, eventually coming out several billion dollars richer but — in the film's ironic telling — without any real friends to speak of. Aaron Sorkin's Oscar-winning script zips us through the highs, the lows and the endless memorable one-liners; his sequel, The Social Reckoning, hits cinemas on 9 October and sees Jeremy Strong take over the Zuckerberg role.
Brand-new biopic The Wizard of the Kremlin also pops up as a Prime exclusive. It tells how Vladimir Putin (played by a wig-wearing Jude Law) rose to power in the 1990s, helped by the relatively unknown scheming of one amoral power-player (Paul Dano). Intriguing and pacey, it's carried by Dano's fantastic turn.
Matt Damon gives a perfectly pitched performance in Ridley Scott's The Martian, playing a man stuck on the Red Planet, 140 million miles from Earth. As with this year's smash hit Project Hail Mary, it's been adapted (by screenwriter Drew Goddard) from a novel by science buff Andy Weir, and has just the same verve, personality, genuine emotion and epic scale.
Indie comedy Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) is low-key but far from low on ambition, as director Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) follows three journalists who answer a supermarket worker's bizarre personal ad for someone to travel back in time with. Mark Duplass and Aubrey Plaza are excellent in the leads.
You could try Oscar-winning and -nominated fare such as Manchester by the Sea, Network and The Philadelphia Story, plus original movies such as romcom Saltburn and Palm Springs, or feel-good pictures like hit musical Everybody's Talking about Jamie, meaning there is plenty to inspire film fans.
