John McGinn Misses Penalty As Aston Villa Held By Fulham In The Premier League

Translate

John McGinn missed a penalty as Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in the Premier League. Nicolas Jackson's eighth goal of the season had put Unai Emery's side ahead heading into the break after McGinn's early spot-kick miss. However, an improved second-half display from Fulham saw the visitors deservedly draw level when goalkeeper Zion Suzuki spilled Alex Iwobi's corner into his own net. They then withstood late pressure from Villa to ensure the points were shared. Jackson continued his fine form, finishing off a well-worked move involving Johan Manzambi to hand Villa a 39th-minute lead at Villa Park as Emery's side chased a third consecutive league victory.

The goal came after Fulham's Sander Berge was penalised for handball early in the match, but Villa captain McGinn failed to capitalise as his penalty struck the woodwork.

Fulham created several opportunities, with Gonzalo Garcia heavily involved, and eventually found their equaliser in the second half when Suzuki misjudged Iwobi's corner and turned the ball into his own goal.

The result moved Villa up to ninth in the table, while Fulham climbed to 15th.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur secured their third successive Premier League win with a comfortable 2-0 victory over 10-man Crystal Palace.

Palace suffered a major setback in the 13th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta was shown a straight red card for a foul on Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.

Archie Gray opened the scoring midway through the first half before Jan Paul van Hecke doubled Tottenham's advantage after the break to cap a dominant display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Palace showed resilience but struggled to pose a sustained threat as Tottenham comfortably saw out the match.

The victory lifted Spurs to eighth in the standings, while Palace remained 18th.
