The Third Season Of Gerard Butler's Jack Ryan Meets The Night Agent Thriller Quietly Marks The End Of An Era

Gerard Butler's thriller series is an addictive blend of The Night Agent and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, but the announcement of season three marks the quiet end of an era for the franchise. While Reacher has since become Prime Video's crown jewel, this spot was formerly taken by its Jack Ryan series. This reinvented the Tom Clancy character for a new generation, while underlining that there is a huge, built-in audience for book adaptations.

That's why other streamers set out to nab their very own Reacher-style shows, with Netflix earning itself a hit with The Night Agent. A nice blend of conspiracy thriller and action show, it was a major success during its first year, though its popularity noticeably dipped in later years. That's why, sadly, The Night Agent season four will be the show's last - though that does give it the same number of seasons as Jack Ryan.

Another show in a similar vein is Paris Has Fallen, the TV spinoff of the Has Fallen movie franchise. The TV version moved the action to the French capital and saw two agents work together to stop a terror attack on the city.

Shadow Has Fallen Proves The Franchise Has Moved Past Gerard Butler's Mike Banning

While the critical response to the film saga was always mixed, Paris Has Fallen earned itself an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. While it has yet to receive an air date, the second series, Apollo Has Fallen, is on the way, which will once again be led by MI6 agent Zara (Ritu Arya) and Protection Service bodyguard Vincent (Tewfik Jallab).

It has now been confirmed that the franchise's future belongs on TV, as a third season dubbed Shadow Has Fallen is already greenlit. In short, the property has moved on from the movie trilogy, and past Butler's Mike Banning too. This makes sense in one regard, as the films have stalled out - at least for now - while Paris Has Fallen opened up a brand new avenue for the franchise.

Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman are the only two actors to appear in every Has Fallen movie.

Plus, Vincent and Zara make for a quite likable buddy duo, and it will be fun to chart their evolving relationship over the next two seasons. It should be noted Butler is still involved with the series as a producer, but that appears to be a largely hands-off role. There had been rumors suggesting Banning would cameo on Paris Has Fallen, but these proved to be incorrect when the show debuted.

A Fourth Has Fallen Movie Doesn't Seem To Be Happening

The Has Fallen trilogy gave Banning a complete arc as a character too. The final outing, Angel Has Fallen (2019), saw Mike aging out of his role as a Secret Service agent, reconciling with his estranged father (a scene-stealing Nick Nolte), and deciding to spend more time with his family. Still, a fourth entry called Night Has Fallen was announced in 2020, but talk of the sequel soon went quiet. Director Ric Roman Waugh later told Polygon in 2026 that there was no movement on the fourth film at all.

Butler himself is busier than ever and has more action movies in his future, like Empire City. The star last spoke about Night Has Fallen in 2023 to ComicBook.com, stating, "We have a really fun idea, it just needs to be developed." However, he also expressed a desire to move toward more grounded action thrillers like Plane, where the focus is on character and where he doesn't have to perform "seven or eight full-on fight sequences in every movie."

It sounds like Butler is open to a comeback to the Has Fallen franchise, but both he and the series itself are moving in different directions. For now, the focus is very much on the TV show, and its doubtful Butler will be making any guest appearances on it. A fourth installment is still possible, but it's starting to feel like the movie saga has quietly ended and that Zara and Vincent have replaced Banning as the heads of the franchise.
