SINGAPORE, Oct 31 — A 30-year-old man who fled the scene after a fatal accident in Tampines here on Thursday night has been arrested.

The accident, which took place along Tampines Avenue 12 at about 10.35pm, involved two cars and a motorcycle.

Police told AsiaOne in an earlier statement that they were tracing the whereabouts of the man and his female passenger.

Both had fled the scene before police officers arrived and the man did not render assistance.

In an updated statement on Saturday morning, the police said the man and his 29-year-old female passenger were identified and arrested in the vicinity of West Coast Road on Friday.

They added that preliminary investigations found that the man had driven a deregistered car with a cloned number plate while under disqualification.

After the accident, a 24-year-old male motorcyclist and his female pillion rider, also 24, were conveyed unconscious to Changi General Hospital where they later died of their injuries.

A 25-year-old female driver of the other car was conveyed conscious to Sengkang General Hospital.

The 30-year-old will be charged in court on Saturday and faces a total of nine charges:

  • Dangerous driving causing hurt;
  • Dangerous driving causing death;
  • Driving under disqualification;
  • Failing to stop after an accident;
  • Failing to render assistance after an accident;
  • Using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage;
  • Using a deregistered car;
  • Using a car without a licence;
  • Exhibiting a false licence plate.

The offence of dangerous driving causing death carries a jail term of up to eight years while the offence of driving under disqualification carries a fine up to $10,000 or jail term of up to three years or both.

The police also reiterated that they take a serious view of motorists who use deregistered vehicles, drive under disqualification, or commit other serious offences.

“Such reckless and irresponsible acts endanger the safety of other road users. The police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who disregard traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users,” they added. — AsiaOne
