Muizenberg beachfront project: St James Walkway, parking area now open [video]

Muizenberg beachgoers have more reason to celebrate, with the opening of the upgraded St James Walkway access and western parking area.

The latest milestone brings the Muizenberg beachfront revamp closer to completion ahead of the festive season.

Visitors can now access the western side of the beach from Surfer’s Corner. The City says the project remains on track, with most of the work expected to be completed by mid-December.

Muizenberg beachfront parking area reopens

The newly-paved parking area is located on the western side of the beachfront, next to the railway line. It features new kerbing made with recycled plastic, benches and provisions for streetlights.

Universal-access parking and pedestrian walkways have also been incorporated into the upgrade. The streetlights will be switched on once the project is complete.

“The festive season is around the corner and I’m sure locals and visitors to the Muizenberg beachfront will be super excited to hear that we are now in the final phase of the upgrade project,” said Eddie Andrews, Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor, on Friday.

“Earlier this morning, we celebrated a massive milestone with the opening of the beach access to the St James Walkway at Surfer’s Corner.”

What remains in the beachfront upgrade?

The refurbishments in Muizenberg began in February 2025 and is now more than 84% complete. The project includes replacing ageing seawalls and upgrading public amenities.

Work still under way includes construction of the new central ablution facility and improvements to the Shark Spotters and Adaptive Surfing buildings.

The remaining sections of the old seawall are also being removed. Meanwhile, construction continues on the stepped revetment, pergola, planters and seating areas.

Work has also started on the playground. About 85% of the precast steps and promenade units have been installed, providing coastal protection and beach access at different levels.

Andrews thanked residents, businesses and regular beach visitors for their patience during construction.

“There has been a lot of noise, movement, and machinery on site, and this work is having an impact on beach access in particular,” added Andrews, who is also the City’s Mayco Member for Spatial Planning.

“This is a mammoth project, but we are nearly there and are as excited to see the upgrades and improvements concluded.”
