Indonesia aims to operationalize 1,369 Fishing Villages by 2027

Bantul, Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries aims to have 1,369 Red and White Fishing Villages fully operational by early 2027, as part of a broader plan to develop 5,000 modernized fishing villages nationwide.
Speaking in Bantul, Yogyakarta, on Thursday, the ministry’s Secretary-General, Andy Artha Donny Oktopura, said President Prabowo Subianto had set a target of developing 5,000 Red and White Fishing Villages across Indonesia in phases.
He explained that the ministry aims to complete infrastructure development at 1,369 fishing villages between 2025 and 2026.
“Out of those 5,000, the ministry is carrying out development across 1,369 locations from 2025 through 2026. All of them are expected to be fully operational by early 2027,” he said.
Of the 1,369 villages, 1,269 are currently under construction, while the remaining 100 are in the operational preparation phase.
Andy said the ministry would step up technical assistance for fishing village administrators, provide training and education for local communities and fishers, and facilitate access to financing before the villages become fully operational.
“Developing these villages is not just about building infrastructure; it is also about transforming work cultures and operational standards,” Andy added.
He explained that building a functioning village ecosystem also requires introducing new working practices among fishers, including supplying ice through village facilities and improving fish marketing systems.
“Previously, fishers might sell their catch immediately after landing it. Now, with portable cold storage, they can preserve their catch without sacrificing quality, allowing them to get higher prices,” he said.
According to Andy, the program is one of President Prabowo Subianto’s strategic initiatives to transform coastal development, increase fishers’ productivity and welfare, and improve the quality of fishery products.
“The main goal is to create an economic ecosystem that benefits and facilitates fishers,” he added.
