Coastal Carolina's 90s-themed throwback football jerseys leave fans on the internet divided

I've said this many times before, but one of my favorite things about college football are the myriad uniform combinations and unique concepts that programs come up with.

Even just this past weekend, plenty of teams unveiled some absolutely gorgeous uniforms, including the Florida Gators in their 60s throwbacks and the Utah Utes with their "icy" helmets.

Even some of the most traditional powers that the sport has to offer have busted out some new uniform combinations to get their fans excited (think Georgia's all-white threads and matching white helmet).

One program that isn't a traditional power is Coastal Carolina, and the Chanticleers have always marched to the beat of their own drum.

One need only look at their home field, which is painted in their signature teal color scheme, to see that this is a football team that is willing to push the boundaries of fashion.

So it should come as no shock that the Chanticleers are unveiling their very own 90s throwback jerseys this coming Friday against conference rival Appalachian State.

And when I say "90s throwbacks," I'm not referring to jerseys the team wore 30 years ago. I mean these uniforms are literally 90s themed.

Take a look.

First of all, a special shout out should go to whomever came up with the Coastal Carolina branded Game Boy Color.

If you're of a certain age (likely between 29-45), these jersey's tugged at your nostalgic heartstrings and harkened back to a time when life was simpler.

The description from the official press release regarding the uniforms on Coastal Carolina's athletics website says it best.

"The uniforms draw from the colorful, oversized and unmistakably '90s aesthetic seen in iconic television shows such as 'Saved By The Bell,' 'Boy Meets World,' 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,' 'Friends,' and many more."

Yeah, you guys pretty much nailed it.

Now, while I love being reminded of my youth, some football fans are a little less enthusiastic about their team taking the field looking like an advertisement for an after-school cartoon programming block.

If you're a football guy and you just want your team to come out in their traditional home colors, I get it.

But, on the other hand, let these guys have a little fun.

This is a brilliant marketing ploy by Coastal Carolina, too, taking full advantage of a standalone game on a Friday night on national television.

It doesn't matter if App State hangs 70 on the Chanticleers, everyone will be talking about these jerseys.

If Alabama takes the field this weekend in Seinfeld-themed threads, or Notre Dame announces they'll be letting the players put their favorite Pokemon as a patch on their jerseys, you will be well within your rights to go full "get off my lawn, you kids" mode.

For now, I think we can let Coastal Carolina take some artistic liberties with their uniforms.
