The body of a 22-year-old female student from the University of Limpopo was discovered partially clothed in a trench next to the institution’s fence in Mankweng on Sunday morning.

The body of a 22-year-old University of Limpopo female student was found partially clothed in a trench next to the institution’s fence in Mankweng on Sunday morning, police said.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba added that police were on patrol when they received information about a woman lying motionless along Sovenga Street.
“Upon arrival, police found the body of the female victim partially clothed, with her head positioned inside a trench adjacent to the fence.
“The body was inspected, and no visible external injuries were observed at the scene,” Mashaba said.
Emergency services declared her dead on the scene.
Mashaba added that a bag containing the woman’s ID and National Student Financial Aid Scheme card was found next to her body.
“It is suspected that the deceased may have accidentally fallen into the trench, and the exact circumstances surrounding her death are under investigation.
“Police have opened an inquest, and investigations are continuing,” he said.
In a statement, the university said the untimely death of the student saddened it.
“The death of any student is deeply painful and regrettable,” it added.

The university appealed to members of the public to refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding her death or sharing unverified information.
“As and when verified information becomes available, and when appropriate, the university will share further details. In the meantime, the university appeals to everyone to respect the privacy and dignity of the deceased student, family, friends, fellow students and colleagues, during this difficult time.
“The University of Limpopo extends sincere heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, fellow students and colleagues. We share in their grief during this difficult period,” the statement read.
