Ministry, partners provide Rp1.7 billion in NTT quake relief

The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs and its partners have raised and distributed Rp1.7 billion (US$95,000) in relief aid to communities affected by the powerful earthquake that struck Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Bara Krishna Hasibuan, the ministry's expert staff member for digital transformation and inter-institutional relations, said in a statement received here on Friday that the assistance consisted of Rp990 million in cash aid and Rp710 million worth of relief supplies.

He symbolically handed over the assistance to Ngada Deputy District Head Bernadinus Dhey Ngebu on Thursday (Sept. 24). The relief effort also extended to earthquake-affected communities in Nagekeo, Ende, Sikka, and East Manggarai districts.

During Thursday's handover ceremony, the ministry delivered Rp500 million in assistance to the Ngada district government to support relief and recovery efforts for earthquake survivors across the region.

Cash assistance was also allocated for the rehabilitation of houses of worship, alongside Rp50 million worth of staple goods distributed to residents of Turamuri Village.

Earlier reports indicated that, by the second week of September, Rp565 million worth of basic commodities had been distributed to 1,908 families in nine villages across Ende, Sikka, and East Manggarai districts.

The ministry was supported by state-owned postal company Pos Indonesia and private-sector partners in distributing the relief aid.

"On behalf of the Ngada district government, we would like to express our gratitude to the ministry and all partners for their presence and support. This assistance is very meaningful for our residents as they work to recover from the disaster," Ngebu said.

Archbishop of Ende, Msgr. Paulus Budi Kleden, echoed a similar sentiment, emphasizing ongoing recovery efforts.

"As people of faith and culture, we are striving to rise up and refusing to dwell on the hardship. Our recovery is inseparable from donors, including the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs," he stated.
