Crude oil imports hit 2.39m MT across Lagos ports in August

Crude oil maintained its position as the leading commodity on the import charts across Lagos ports in August, with a total volume of 2,392,354 metric tonnes recorded during the month.

Data showed that 1,867,712 metric tonnes of crude oil arrived at the Lekki Deep Sea Port in the first week of August, while another 524,742 metric tonnes was expected to be discharged at the Lagos Apapa Quays before the end of the month.

The figures indicate sustained dominance of crude oil among commodities handled through the Lagos ports during the period.

Crude oil is closely followed by bulk wheat with a total of 321,849 metric tons,an indication that the confectionery industry is experiencing a boost. Also recall that while 176,243 metric tons in the first week of the month as against 145,606 metric tons being expected towards the end of the month.

Other commodities that were captured in the chart include aviation fuel with a total of 118,000 metric tons against 44,000 recorded for bulk fertilizer. Recall that crude oil imports have led the two major ports in Lagos ( Lekki port and Papa port) in the month of August. Besides crude oil that topped the chart, aviation fuel amongst other commodities also made the chart.

The statistics showed that as of August 10, 2026, aviation fuel, Automated Gas Oil (AGO) and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, were among the major products recorded. A breakdown of the figures showed that a total of 1,525,612 metric tonnes of crude oil came into the country through the port for onward distribution across the country.

Of this volume, aviation fuel accounted for the largest share, with 245,600 metric tonnes, followed by Automated Gas Oil (AGO), which recorded 104,000 metric tonnes.

There was, however, no record of crude oil imports during the period under review. Other commodities on the import chart included Bulk Urea, with 99,000 metric tonnes. Although no containerised cargo was recorded during the period at the Lekki Port, a total of 25 vessels were involved in the shipment of imports through the port within the first 10 days of August.
