Boxing Federation Crisis: 27 Of 35 Units Seek Ad-Hoc Committee, Approach Sports Ministry

Two representatives of the BFI met the Sports Minister on Wednesday to press their demand.
The Boxing Federation of India is headed for a fresh showdown, with 27 of its 35 affiliated units opposing president Ajay Singh and seeking the appointment of an ad-hoc committee to oversee the federation. Two representatives of the BFI met the Sports Minister on Wednesday to press their demand, while the 27 units are also scheduled to meet Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha. The opposing faction has also appealed for a two-judge bench hearing against Wednesday's order. Eight of the 13 executive committee member, while three of the four units of BFI attended the meeting at New Friends Colony's Surya Hotel on Wednesday.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had restrained Secretary General Pramod Kumar from keeping the General Body meeting scheduled for October 28 in abeyance until the next hearing on November 13.
The interim stay follows a petition filed by Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh challenging Kumar's October 8 notice, which sought to convene the General Body to vote on a motion of no confidence against him.
The developments come amid a deepening dispute over the federation's administration, with the two camps holding separate meetings. Ajay Singh's faction, comprising eight members, held a meeting in Dibrugarh.
If an ad-hoc committee is instituted, BFI senior vice-president Rajesh Bhandari could emerge as a potential candidate for the interim president's post. However, the immediate focus remains on the Sports Ministry's response to the demand and the legal proceedings following Wednesday's order.
"Every time an official within the Boxing Federation has questioned Ajay Singh's authority, they have either been suspended or served with a show-cause notice," said BFI Senior VP Rajesh Bhandari.
Bhandari warned that if the situation does not improve, they may be forced to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in the coming days.
"If we do not get any respite from this situation, it is possible that we will sit at Jantar Mantar in the coming days," he added.
