Waskita says Jakarta's LRT route safe fter extensive testing

Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned construction company PT Waskita Karya (Persero) said Jakarta's light-rail transit, particularly the Velodrome-Manggarai route, is safe for tens of thousands of passengers after undergoing comprehensive testing.

“User and worker safety is our top priority. We continue coordinating with project owner Jakpro to address various situations,” Waskita Operations II Director Paulus Budi Kartiko said here Thursday.

Field teams installed safety nets around the balance-girder segments and conducted daily monitoring surveys and chamber inspections, Paulus said.

The measures helped Waskita achieve 7.5 million safe working hours without a lost-time injury during construction, despite limited space and heavy traffic in Jakarta.

The company completed the project using innovations including balanced cantilevers above the active Wiyoto Wiyono Toll Road and long-span steel box girders over the active Manggarai Double-Double Track.

All construction methods and structures complied with occupational health and safety standards, Paulus said.

Waskita will continue supporting stronger regional connectivity and public-transport integration in the capital, while promoting Jakarta as a modern and environmentally friendly city.

“We are optimistic that the Jakarta LRT Phase 1B will expand public transportation options in the capital,” Paulus said.

The electric-powered transit system will help improve urban air quality while supporting Indonesia's net-zero emissions target, he said.

The Kelapa Gading-Manggarai LRT project was fully financed through the regional budget, costing Rp12.1 trillion, or about US$682 million.

The 12.2-kilometer route is expected to carry about 80,000 passengers a day.
