Lindsay Lohan’s New Netflix Movie Is Officially A Freaky Friday & Mean Girls Reunion

Netflix has set a Freaky Friday and Mean Girls reunion for Lindsay Lohan.

Freaky Friday and Mean Girls are widely regarded as Lindsay Lohan's best movies, and along with The Parent Trap, are the most iconic from the earlier part of her career. In more recent years, many of her films have been Netflix productions, including Falling for Christmas, Our Little Secret, and Irish Wish. She also reprised the role of Anna Coleman in Disney's long-awaited sequel, Freakier Friday, and voiced an older version of Maggie Simpson in The Simpsons season 37, episode 11, "Parahormonal Activity."

Netflix has now announced that Lohan is reuniting with Freaky Friday and Mean Girls director Mark Waters for the romance feature film Return to You. She stars alongside Henry Golding, who is known for his previous roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas, A Simple Favor, Snake Eyes, and Nine Perfect Strangers. Lohan is producing the film alongside Brad Krevoy, Olivia Krevoy, Jimmy Townsend, and Galen Fletcher, while the script is written by Eric Champnella. Set in 2008, a powerful but lonely attorney mistakenly receives a very emotional DVD from a dying woman addressed to her husband. Guided only by the clues on the disc, she sets out to find him.

Return to You is Lohan and Waters' first movie together since Mean Girls in 2004, as Nisha Ganatra directed Freakier Friday. In the 22 years since their last collaboration, Waters has directed The Spiderwick Chronicles, Mr. Popper's Penguins, Vampire Academy, and Bad Santa 2. For Netflix, he has directed He's All That, Mother of the Bride, and La Dolce Villa. Waters also directed the biopic Hershey, which is releasing in theaters on November 25.

Both he and Lohan have a great deal of experience in comedy, including many rom-coms, but based on the logline, Return to You appears to be more of a romantic drama. This shift in genre makes it new territory for the actor and director duo. However, the new story is set in the same decade as Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, brings back physical media to play an important role, and has the potential to lean into nostalgia given the time period.

Outside of Return to You, which does not have a set release date yet, Lindsay Lohan's other upcoming project is Count My Lies, a Hulu miniseries based on Sophie Stava's thriller novel of the same name. The star-studded cast also features Shailene Woodley, Kit Harington, and Katherine LaNasa. With Freaky Friday 3 not confirmed yet, despite interest being expressed by various members of the cast and crew, Lohan's most imminent releases are coming via streaming rather than in theaters.
