Prabowo gives Rp158.3 bln bonuses to Asian Games, Para Games medalists

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto awarded Rp158.3 billion (about US$8.71 million) in bonuses to medal-winning athletes and coaches from the 2026 Asian Games and Asian Para Games at Jakarta's State Palace on Thursday.

Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said Rp61.1 billion (about US$3.36 million) went to Asian Games medalists and coaches, while Rp97.2 billion (about US$5.35 million) went to Asian Para Games recipients.

Indonesia won 39 medals at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan: five gold, 11 silver and 23 bronze, finishing 16th and exceeding its target of four gold medals.

Indonesian para-athletes won 73 medals at the 2026 Asian Para Games, including 15 gold, 21 silver and 37 bronze. The haul put Indonesia eighth, more than doubling its gold-medal target of seven.

Under the incentive scheme, individual gold medalists received Rp3 billion (about US$165,000) each, doubles winners Rp2.4 billion (about US$132,000) per athlete and team-event winners Rp1.5 billion (about US$82,500) each.

Thohir said details of bonuses for silver and bronze medalists, as well as coaching staff, would be released later.

He said the funds were transferred directly to athletes' personal bank accounts between Wednesday, Oct. 28, and Thursday morning.

Several national sports federations, including those for sport climbing, badminton and weightlifting, confirmed their athletes had received the funds, Thohir added.

Prabowo first pledged the individual gold-medal bonus when he sent off Indonesia's contingent at the palace in September. The award marks a substantial increase from previous multisport events.

The new reward is three times the Rp1 billion (about US$55,000) paid for gold at the 2025 SEA Games and nearly double the Rp1.575 billion (about US$86,600) awarded at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
