AHS Season 13’s Canceled Crossover With Glen Powell’s Iconic Horror Series Confirmed By Ryan Murphy

Glen Powell's campy horror series nearly made its first return to TV in 10 years.

Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story season 13 premieres its first three episodes tonight as the long-running show's biggest outing yet. As an epic crossover 15 years in the making, American Horror Story season 13's cast brings back numerous iconic characters and stars from previous seasons as they unite against the ultimate supernatural evil. However, Murphy's original plan had this massive crossover event even extending to a different TV series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, series creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that Ariana Grande was originally set to reprise her role as Chanel #2 from the two-season horror show Scream Queens in American Horror Story season 13. The horror-comedy, also created by Ryan Murphy, originally followed a sorority at a university being targeted by a serial killer, with the second season moving the story to a hospital. Grande's character, Sonya Herfmann aka Chanel #2, appeared in season 1 as one of Chanel Oberlin's (Emma Roberts) minions.

Ariana Grande was originally announced to be joining the cast of American Horror Story season 13 in November 2025, though no character details were revealed before her exit from the new season was confirmed in July 2026. Murphy has now explained to THR that Scream Queens' return in American Horror Story season 13 didn't come to fruition due to Grande's touring schedule, but the pair are still intent on making the crossover work in the future:

Ryan Murphy: “It was funny because at one point I was going to have the Scream Queens come on to this season, but Ariana was touring and I couldn’t make it work. But she was like, ‘I still want to do it! I just can’t be on tour.’ So I was like, ‘All right, let me think of it.'”

Considering Ryan Murphy already has plans for American Horror Story season 14, though the series has yet to receive an official renewal from FX, there are good chances for the long-awaited crossover to finally happen in coming seasons. Over the 10 years since its cancellation by Fox, Murphy has also expressed a desire to make Scream Queens season 3. Therefore, there's also the potential for the crossover to happen back at the fictional Wallace University.

In addition to Ariana Grande and American Horror Story star Emma Roberts, the all-star cast of Scream Queens included Glen Powell, Lea Michele, Skyler Samuels, Keke Palmer, Abigail Breslin, Oliver Hudson, Billie Lourd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nasim Pedrad, Diego Boneta, Niecy Nash, Nick Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Jerry O'Connell, and many more. At the New York City premiere for American Horror Story season 13, Murphy revealed that several original Scream Queens stars want to come back for more:

Ryan Murphy: "Yes, so funny, Emma [Roberts] and I were talking about that yesterday. You know, they want me to do it. I don’t know. Emma really wants to do it. I know Billie wants to do it. Lea wants to do it. Ariana wants to do it and Glen, my favorite of all time."

With the filmmaker also looking to potentially revive his hit series Glee, the Ryan Murphy TV dominance isn't slowing down any time soon. As the fate of American Horror Story season 14 awaits a decision from FX, as does the anticipated comeback of his other major early and mid-2010s TV shows.

American Horror Story season 13 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, September 24 at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu. New episodes are released weekly on Thursday nights.
