Watch: Why family who lived at site of 7 October attack want to return

Translate

As Israel marks the third anniversary of the 7 October Hamas attacks, the BBC has visited residents of kibbutz Nir Oz - one of the worst hit places.

Sitting just a mile (1.6km) from the Gaza border, 41 Nir Oz residents and foreign workers were killed along with six people who had fled to the kibbutz from a party nearby. Seventy-six people from the kibbutz were kidnapped to Gaza, including nine bodies. Fourteen of those hostages were taken alive and killed in captivity.

During the 7 October attack, about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. The ensuing war between Israel and Hamas has killed more than 74,200 people in Gaza according to the Hamas-run health ministry – whose overall figures are seen as accurate by the UN.
