Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian said Wednesday the upper chamber will immediately implement the preventive suspension orders for Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Rodante Marcoleta once received from the Sandiganbayan.

In an ambush interview, Gatchalian said he has yet to receive a copy of the suspension orders for the two senators — both of whom are currently detained over separate plunder charges.

Asked if the Senate will instantly execute the suspension orders once received, Gatchalian said, “Normal process is to be immediately executed. So ‘yun ‘yung ginawa (that’s what’s done) in the past.”

The Sandiganbayan Fifth Division earlier placed Estrada under preventive suspension in connection with the plunder and graft charges he is facing related to his alleged involvement in the flood control projects scandal.

It was the second 90-day preventive suspension Estrada has received since the anti-graft court’s Second Division issued a similar resolution in June in connection with the graft charges pending before it.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division, meanwhile, also placed Marcoleta on preventive suspension in connection with the plunder charge he is facing before the anti-graft court over alleged undeclared campaign contributions worth P75 million. — RSJ, GMA News
