Asian Games 2026: Quimcy Dsouza loses Teqball semifinal, to battle for bronze

India’s Quimcy Joaquim Dsouza suffered a 1-2 defeat to Indonesia’s Ima Sumaya in the women’s singles Teqball semifinal at the Asian Games 2026 on Saturday. The 24-year-old will now face Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto in Sunday’s bronze-medal match.A victory in the bronze-medal match would earn India its first-ever Teqball medal at the Asian Games, where the sport is making its debut at the Aichi-Nagoya edition.

Quimcy loses semifinal after strong start

Making her Asian Games debut, Quimcy began the semi-final on a confident note, taking the opening set 12-7. Sumaya responded in the second set, recovering from an early deficit to edge ahead and level the match with a 12-9 win.Quimcy started the decider strongly, racing to a 3-0 lead before extending it to 4-1.

However, Sumaya fought back, took control of the set and closed out the match 12-7 to book her place in the final.The defeat ended Quimcy’s hopes of reaching the gold-medal match, but she will have another opportunity to finish her debut Asian Games campaign on the podium.

Indian had topped group with wins over Japan and Cambodia

Quimcy had secured her semi-final berth after topping Group A with two wins, earning direct passage to the last four and avoiding the quarter-finals.

She began her campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over top-seeded Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto. After losing the first set 10-12, Quimcy fought back to take the second 12-11 before clinching the decider 13-11.She followed that performance with a straight-sets victory over Cambodia’s Koemyean DY, winning 12-9, 12-7 to finish at the top of her group. Quimcy also competed in the mixed doubles event alongside Mohamed Anas Imran Beg.

The Indian pair defeated the Philippines’ Jhoana Abulencia and Prince Agustin in their Group A opener.

Teqball makes Asian Games debut

Teqball, invented in Hungary, combines elements of football and table tennis, using a curved table. The sport resembles a blend of freestyle football and sepak takraw. It is making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, with five medal events: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.Quimcy will now look to cap her debut campaign with a medal when she takes on Sakamoto in Sunday’s bronze-medal match.
