Gail Lerner Fired From Her Own NBC Comedy ‘Newlyweds’

It’s safe to say the honeymoon period between Gail Lerner and NBC has come to an end. Lerner has been fired from her own NBC sitcom, Newlyweds, ahead of its premiere.

In an Instagram post, Lerner says the reason she was given was “creative differences.” An NBC spokesperson confirmed that was the case.

Lerner called Newlyweds, set to premiere on Oct. 23, “the most joyous TV experience of my life.” Newlyweds stars actual married couple Tim Daly and Téa Leoni. Daly and Leoni have been together for more than a decade after meeting on CBS’ 2014-19 drama Madam Secretary.

“Hey Friends, Here’s the good news: I couldn’t be more proud of the new sitcom Newlyweds that I created with the singular Jamie Lee Curtis. Premieres 10/23!” Lerner posted on her Instagram on Friday. “Here’s the bad news: I got fired off it today. The reason I’ve been given is ‘creative differences.'”

“The cloudy part: I’m so sad to be separated from the most joyous TV experience of my life. The cast, crew, and writers are unparalleled,” her caption continued. “The silver lining: the first six episodes were made under my leadership, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Lerner’s got a pretty good attitude about this whole thing.

“No one knows what’s going to happen in our meshuganah business, but I predict this show’s gonna be a barn burner,” she wrote. “Please check out the first six (and beyond!). If you like them, please let me know! If you don’t, keep it to yourself.”

Lerner is a veteran producer. Her credits include Black-ish and its spinoff Mixed-ish, as well as Will & Grace, Happy Endings and Ugly Betty.

“Sending all my love and hopes for a long and happy run to everyone who gave their talent and open hearts to make this happen. As my dear friend @courtneyaltonlilly told me, better to die on your feet than live on your knees,” Lerner’s post reads. It was signed: “Love from your friend on her feet.”
