Police hunt culprits behind suspected MRT cable theft in Damansara

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation to track down suspects behind a suspected cable theft near the MRT tracks between the Phileo Damansara and Pusat Bandar Damansara stations.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said a 27-year-old technician discovered several rolls of cut cables while patrolling with auxiliary police personnel at 2.30am on Friday.

He said the cables were found in an open area along the MRT alignment, about 200m from the Pusat Bandar Damansara station.

"The technician discovered nine rolls of 150mm bare copper cables measuring approximately 90m in total, along with four rolls of 400mm negative cables measuring about 12m.

"Upon inspection, he found that the cables had been cut," he said.

Hoo said the technician did not witness the act and could not confirm the cables' ownership or origin. A police report was lodged at 5.36am.

"The case is being investigated under Sections 379 and 511 of the Penal Code for attempted theft. Investigations are ongoing to identify those involved," Hoo said.

Hoo urged members of the public who witnessed suspicious activities in the area or have information on the incident to come forward and assist police investigations.

It was reported that cable thieves continue to target transport infrastructure, with recent incidents involving the Kajang MRT Line and the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) highlighting security concerns.

In the latest incident, thieves cut about 100m of cable between Phileo Damansara and Pusat Bandar Damansara stations early yesterday.

They abandoned it when auxiliary police and Prasarana personnel approached.

The thieves are believed to have rolled up the cables and left them aside for later collection.

Separately, Plus Malaysia Bhd said its personnel and police had foiled a suspected cable theft attempt along the NKVE, leading to a suspect's arrest.

The attempted theft on the Kajang MRT Line was detected about 5.30am after someone entered the track area between Phileo Damansara and Pusat Bandar Damansara stations.

Rapid KL said power to the affected section was temporarily cut in line with safety procedures.

The power cut allowed auxiliary police to inspect the area and search for suspects while protecting passengers, staff and railway facilities.

Power was restored at 6.32am after the checks were completed.
