Game Of Thrones Movie's Release Update Means It'll Be Perfectly Timed With The End Of An Era

Game of Thrones is finally getting a movie, and it looks like it'll arrive at the exact right time for the franchise. This has long seemed like an inevitability: back before David Benioff and D.B. Weiss made a successful pitch for a series, author George R.R. Martin received several offers to turn his A Song of Ice and Fire books into a movie franchise, but he felt it was too long to be adapted in that way.

Later, when mapping out Game of Thrones' ending, Benioff and Weiss explored the possibility of concluding the series with three feature films with theatrical releases, but that idea was shot down by HBO. Nonetheless, the show redefined TV and just how cinematic it could be, while also leading to a reinvigoration of the fantasy genre, so it's only logical that we'd eventually end up with a Thrones movie.

Said movie is confirmed to be Aegon's Conquest. This is the story of the Targaryen invasion, set around 300 years before Game of Thrones, where Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenyra, flew their dragons to Westeros and successfully conquered the realm, uniting it under a single king and beginning a dynasty.

When Is Game Of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest Releasing?

Aegon's Conquest had originally been in development at HBO as a potential TV show, written by The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin. However, after a couple of years, it was also reported that Warner Bros. was also developing a movie version from Beau Willimon (Andor, House of Cards), and would end up choosing between the two. At CinemaCon 2026 back in April, they officially confirmed Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, listed under films coming "In 2027 and beyond."

WBD followed that up in August, with a shareholder letter last month confirming that Aegon's Conquest was one of the movies that the company had planned for "Beyond 2027," and referring to it as "the theatrical event film Aegon's Conquest."

That's still fairly broad in terms of release, but does at least confirm it is not coming in 2027. Admittedly that isn't a surprise at this stage, since the movie doesn't have a director or cast and will also need a lengthy time in post-production since the story heavily involves three large dragons, but it does mean it'll be well-timed for the wider franchise.

Aegon's Conquest Is Coming At The Right Time

Given that update, the earliest we can expect the Aegon's Conquest movie is 2028, but even that may be ambitious. Given it's still in the writing stage and we're entering the final few months of 2026, then it isn't impossible it'll arrive then, but 2029 might be a safer bet.

Either way, this is going to come with the end of another era for the Game of Thrones franchise: House of the Dragon season 4, which will mark the end of the prequel series, and is confirmed for release in 2028.

Aegon's Conquest may be destined for the big screen, but it's really the perfect replacement, and probably better off not only coming after that show ends, but in a separate year when it can be given even more marketing focus. After all, unlike A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, these are two major spectacle-driven tentpoles where Targaryens and dragons are very much the selling point.

House of the Dragon has actually made Aegon the Conqueror's dream core to its narrative: this is a prophecy wherein he foresaw the coming of the White Walkers, and it's been used as a motivation for multiple main characters in the show, including Rhaenyra Targaryen. That'll no doubt continue into season 4 as well, and it could be something the movie itself explores.

Because of that, it feels quite neat to go further back in time after House of the Dragon and to Aegon's Conquest, and it makes sense in terms of theme and narrative. House of the Dragon is, in a way, the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, because it destroys so much of itself, and so it'll be more fascinating after seeing that play out in its entirety to then go back to the actual beginning of the dynasty in Game of Thrones' movie.
