Elderly woman dies in Lucena City riverbank fire

LUCENA CITY — A 74-year-old woman died on Tuesday after a fire of still undetermined origin destroyed her house along the Dumacaa River in this city, police said.
The Lucena City police said the fire broke out at around 3:30 p.m. in a residential area beneath a bridge along the river in Barangay Market View.
An initial report said 17 houses, mostly made of light materials, were destroyed before firemen extinguished the fire more than an hour later.

Firefighters recovered the charred remains of the victim inside the comfort room of her burned house. The report did not indicate where her family members were when the fire broke out.
About 34 families displaced by the fire were temporarily housed at an evacuation center and were receiving assistance from local social workers.
Property damage was estimated at P300,000.
