Martin Lewis’ wife Lara Lewington gives update on painful health battle from hospital bed

Martin Lewis’ wife Lara Lewington has opened up on an underlying health condition that she recently underwent surgery for.

On Wednesday, Lewington shared a photo of herself in her hospital bed as she revealed that she had a hysterectomy due to complications from adenomyosis.

Adenomyosis is a non-cancerous condition where the inner lining of the uterus grows into its outer muscle wall, causing the womb to enlarge and leading to painful periods.

Symptoms include pain, heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating and pain during sex, though some people with the condition have no symptoms.

In an Instagram post, she shared: “Ten days ago I had a hysterectomy after a rollercoaster with adenomyosis (the lesser-known sibling of endometriosis, a condition that on average takes 9.4 years for diagnosis.”

She added: “I’m recovering really well and excited about a new project kicking off next month, a podcast, not unrelated to this post! Back to work tomorrow in the meantime.”

Lewington, who is a tech journalist, revealed that her wearable health devices instantly picked up that her body was in distress after the surgery, as she shared screenshots of the readings.

“I could see my body’s stress, what a short walk did to my heart rate during recovery, and sometimes when my body showed signs of strain but there was a lot a device doesn’t notice.

"Pain, tiredness, and the fact I didn’t feel ready for anything beyond being slumped on the sofa (despite my impressive readiness score tempered by a symptom radar alert),” she said, adding that she is intrigued to see how her data looks over the next weeks as she recovers.

Followers and friends flocked to the comments to issue messages of support to Lewington. Jeremy Vine wrote: “Hope all is well with you,” while Saira Khan commented: “Omg! Are you okay my lovely ?”

The condition often takes years to diagnose as its symptoms resemble other conditions such as fibroids and endometriosis.

The average time it takes to diagnose is around 10 to 11 years, according to WebMD.

Lewington has been married to the Money Saving Expert for over 14 years and is well-known as a former presenter for Channel 5 weather, Five News, Sky News, and co-host of the BBC technology show Click.

The couple share a daughter named Sapphire, who was born in 2012.
