India veteran Rohit Sharma is serious about continuing to play for India until the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in South Africa next year. After a year full of speculation around his international career, Rohit finally seems to have cemented his place in the team's plans in the 50-over format. However, his retirement from Tests and T20Is does deprive him of regular match practice. To solve this problem, Rohit has reportedly decided to play for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Rohit has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his availability for the domestic one-day cricket tournament. The exact number of matches that he plans to play, however, has not been revealed yet.
"He has informed us that he will be playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and to consider him available after India's three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home. How many matches he will be available for, he will inform us later," an MCA source was quoted as saying by the paper.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy starts on December 14, and the final is scheduled for January 08. Rohit is also expected to be a part of India's ODI series against Sri Lanka, from December 13 to 19, at home. India will later be involved in an ODI series against Zimbabwe, starting January 03.
How Rohit Sharma Fared in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Last Season
Rohit Sharma returned to domestic cricket last season, representing Mumbai in two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches in Jaipur, marking his first appearances in the competition since 2018. His campaign began with a sensational 94-ball 155 against Sikkim, though he was dismissed for a golden duck against Uttarakhand just two days later.
These games brought his career total for Mumbai in the tournament to 20 appearances. Having stepped down from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, he now represents India exclusively in One Day Internationals.
