Pamitinan Protected Landscape in Rizal to reopen Sept. 19

LUCENA CITY — The Pamitinan Protected Landscape (PPL) in Montalban, Rizal, will reopen to the public on Sept. 19, according to thd Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Calabarzon said on Wednesday (September 16) .

 “We are pleased to inform the public that ecotourism activities in Pamitinan Protected Landscape (PPL) will resume on Sept. 19 following the completion of necessary cleanup operations, campsite maintenance, and safety assessment activities within the protected area,” the agency said in a public advisory posted on Facebook.

The agency said the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO), in coordination with concerned stakeholders and local tour guides, had undertaken measures to ensure that tourism areas and facilities were safe and ready for visitors.

The DENR, however, reminded visitors to observe safety guidelines, stay on designated trails and in authorized areas, and follow the instructions of PAMO personnel and authorized tour guides while inside the protected landscape.

“Your cooperation is essential in maintaining the safety of everyone and protecting the natural resources of PPL,” the agency said.

PPL was closed on Aug. 22 after cracks were discovered at its summit, prompting authorities to conduct repairs and safety assessments.

PPL, a popular destination for rock climbers and outdoor enthusiasts, is prone to rockslides.

The 608-hectare protected landscape encompasses the Montalban Gorge, Wawa Dam, the Upper Marikina River, Mount Pamitinan, Mount Binacayan and Pamitinan Cave.

 Historical accounts say Andres Bonifacio and other Katipuneros used the cave as a hideout, while local tradition associates the area with the legendary figure Bernardo Carpio. /mr
