Indonesia exports US$21.3M in animal vaccines to four African nations

..Indonesia's domestic demand for AI and ND vaccines is now being met by local production, allowing manufacturers to allocate additional capacity to export markets.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Agriculture is seeking to expand Indonesia's animal health product exports globally following the inaugural export of domestically produced vaccines to four African countries, valued at US$21.3 million.

"This is an extraordinary achievement and we support efforts to expand exports. We must be capable of not only producing goods for domestic needs but also exporting them," the ministry's Director General of Livestock and Animal Health, Agung Suganda, said at the inaugural export launch in Jakarta on Thursday.

The initial export shipment by Vaksindo targeted Zambia, Congo, Uganda, and Malawi, comprising 10 types of poultry vaccines to help control various diseases that can affect livestock productivity, he explained.

The exported products include vaccines for Newcastle disease (ND), infectious bronchitis (IB), and infectious bursal disease (IBD), among other poultry ailments.

According to Suganda, this export expansion is part of the government's effort to strengthen the national animal health industry while opening new market access for domestic products.

He noted that the majority of Vaksindo's output consists of various poultry vaccines, including those for avian influenza (AI), ND, and IB.

Suganda said Indonesia's domestic demand for AI and ND vaccines is now being met by local production, allowing manufacturers to allocate additional capacity to export markets.

He said opportunities to expand into other export markets remain open. However, entering new markets requires document submissions, product evaluations, and production facility audits to meet the requirements of each destination country.

Before entering the African market, Vaksindo had already exported animal vaccines and medicines to more than 25 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Vaksindo currently exports to 29 countries and projects export value to reach US$26 million in 2026. The inaugural shipment to Africa is part of the company's efforts to achieve that target.

The government also views the growth in animal medicine exports as a sign of the expanding capacity of Indonesia's animal health industry. Veterinary medicine exports have grown by around 22 percent annually, while Indonesian vaccine products have reached 95 countries.
