The Boys Officially Switched Genres In Trigger Warning (To Mixed Results)

Translate

Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Running from 2019 to 2026 and giving fans 40 episodes of complete chaos, The Boys offered a unique spin on the superhero genre. Whilst we may be used to superheroes saving the day, thwarting the villain, and causing millions of dollars worth of structural damage to entire cities, The Boys spun the genre on its head by making the superheroes... well, not very heroic.

Based on the comic book series of the same name created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the story followed a team of vigilantes who made it their mission to put the end to "Supes", heroes who use their power and notoriety for personal gain.

Being met with critical acclaim whilst airing on Prime Video, many agree that The Boys fell off in its last two seasons. However, there is no denying that it made an impact on television, with multiple spin-offs such as Gen V and the upcoming Vought Rising still seeing fans excited to see what comes next.

The Boys' Universe Continues To Expand

Released back in March 2026, The Boys: Trigger Warning is a VR stealth-action video game set in the iconic universe. Developed by ARVORE and published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, it was launched for the Meta Quest, and later the PSVR 2, and features an original story written in collaboration with the creators of Prime Video's The Boys.

You get into the fray as Lucas as your family day at Voughtland ends up in tragedy! After uncovering a grotesque secret, you’ll have to hunt down the responsible and save your daughter with the aid of Butcher and The Boys. But their help comes at a price: you must use your newfound powers to infiltrate Vought and sabotage a sinister operation from within.

Featuring "diabolical combat", stealthy VR gameplay, unique powers, and unpredictable allies and foes, The Boys: Trigger Warning sounds intriguing on paper, but it seems as though this genre shift is not appealing to the whole fanbase.

Not Everybody Is On Board

Despite offering an original story, gory gameplay, and nods to the hit television series, The Boys: Trigger Warning has been met with mixed reviews by players. So much so, that the VR title currently sits at a mere 5.3 user score over on Metacritic.

By flicking through the user reviews, a clear picture is formed, with one review reading, "Overall, a fun experience that is believable as part of The Boys storyline and universe without getting in the way of the main show's plot. The mechanics and VR aspects can be somewhat finicky at times, and it being stuck on VR devices hurts it overall", whilst another simply says, "So bad, I’d rather drink my own urine than continue playing this. Do not recommend."

See? I told you they were mixed. "In a time when many games play it safe, it's refreshing to see a VR title that fully embraces the mature, graphic, and unapologetically over-the-top content that defines the franchise," a 10/10 review read. "That kind of creative boldness deserves recognition on its own. The gameplay, visuals, and overall production are decent and do their job well, but what really makes this game stand out is that the developers had the courage to deliver the experience fans of The Boys would actually expect."

In comparison, another read, "Don’t watch this thing. Absolute 0/10 about the disrespect! If I can put less than 0, I will without hesitation."

However, the only way to fully review a game is to experience it for yourself, so, if you are able to play The Boys: Trigger Warning and you just so happen to be a fan of the hit show, it may just be time to make your mind up for yourself.
