Police have issued an update on their investigation into the death of a missing 11-year-old girl whose body was found at a Worcestershire park.

The girl, who has not yet been named by police, was reported missing at approximately 11.20pm on Sunday, and was later found dead in the park near the cricket ground in Elmley Castle, near Pershore, West Mercia Police said.

In an update on Tuesday, the force confirmed they are not seeking any third party in connection with her death amid “speculation” over the incident. Detectives said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death, which is being treated as “unexplained”.

“We’re aware of speculation surrounding this incident and the community impact it is having and we can confirm at this time we are not trying to identify any third party involved and further details will be released when we are able to,” West Mercia Police said on Tuesday afternoon.

They added they do not believe there is any risk to the wider community and officers will “keep an open mind” as enquiries progress.

Pictures show floral tributes left at the scene as neighbours described their shock at the news. Speaking near the scene on Monday, one passerby said: “My neighbour told me what the police have said and it’s terrible, tragic news.

“It’s a terrible shock and you feel for the family.”

Chief Inspector Daniel Pilkington said: “Our thoughts remain with the girl’s family and friends at what is an incredibly sad and difficult time for them.

“We understand the death of a young girl will have caused considerable sadness and concern within Elmley Castle and the wider community.

“Officers are continuing to work to establish the circumstances surrounding her death and, while we keep an open mind as those enquiries progress, there is nothing at this stage to suggest there is any wider risk to the community.

“People may continue to see officers in Elmley Castle while this work takes place, and I hope their presence provides some reassurance to residents."

He said the girl’s family continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

Dame Harriett Baldwin, the MP for West Worcestershire, also urged against speculation. In a statement, she said: “I have been briefed by West Mercia Police which is investigating a tragic incident which occurred over the weekend in Elmley Castle. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the young girl who died and I offer my support to any constituent who needs it at this difficult time."

She added: "There has been a great deal of media interest regarding this incident and I would encourage people not to speculate on this very sad matter. I am assured that once the facts are known, West Mercia Police will make a further statement."
