Meet Los Gemelos de Sinaloa, the Twins Winning the Música Mexicana Game

Translate

The brothers have a new label, a new outlook, and a slew of hits — plus a major U.S. tour on the way

After a decade of making music together, Los Gemelos de Sinaloa are finally getting their moment to shine. This past year, the duo of Mexican American twins have gotten support and a big push from Fuerza Regida frontman Jesús Ortiz Paz. Following the recent hit “Ferrari,” Los Gemelos de Sinaloa have kept the momentum going with their new album The Gemeliza. Now, the rising música mexicana stars are gearing up for their first tour of the U.S.

“It will be a different experience because Los Gemelos have songs for everything,” Juan Moises Cardenas, who also goes by Gemelo, tells Rolling Stone. “We have songs about people that passed away, love songs, songs for people that are sad, or songs to pop a fucking bottle to. Los Gemelos have all the feelings in our music.”

Los Gemelos de Sinaloa includes Gemelo and his twin brother Robert “Temu” Cardenas. While their parents are based in Sinaloa, Temu and Gemelo were born and raised in Paramount, Calif. The duo credits their mother, who had dreams of being a professional singer, for instilling them with her love of music. “Since that didn’t happen for her, she always gave us everything,” Temu says. At first, it was Gemelo who was serious about a career in music. When competing on the reality TV competition Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento in 2014, he decided to form Los Gemelos de Sinaloa with his brother.

In the years that followed, Los Gemelos de Sinaloa worked with many record labels. As the brothers were coming up in the industry so was Fuerza Regida, and they befriended Paz, who is also known as JOP. While trying out different labels, Temu and Gemelo kept in touch with JOP. Los Gemelos de Sinaloa scored a few hits like 2022’s “Andamos Mejor” and “Ahora Todo Es Diferente” before losing steam. After a public and contentious split with their last label Rancho Humilde, they soon reached out to JOP for a management deal with his label Street Mob Records.

“We had songs with JOP from Fuerza, so we already had a bond,” Gemelo says. “We’ve been friends with him for a long time. We always talk and he’s always been the person to tell us, ‘You can do this.’ He’s there to motivate people and it’s been a pleasure working with him and Street Mob.”

Editor’s picks

Since signing with Street Mob Records, Los Gemelos de Sinaloa are bigger than ever before. This year, they hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Regional Mexican Songs chart with “Ferrari,” their collaboration with Fuerza Regida and Clave Especial. “It’s another song that boosted our career,” Temu says. Gemelo was the most hands-on for the duo’s album The Gemeliza, which dropped last month. He wrote and co-produced the songs on the LP that weave through corridos, sierreño, and norteño music. “We are trying to put a different sauce on música mexicana,” Gemelo says. “We try to talk about prospering, motivation, and God in our music.”

Los Gemelos de Sinaloa teamed up with Fuerza Regida for multiple songs on the album. JOP joins them on the rowdy “Chrome Hearts,” the romantic “Baby Mama,” and the aspirational “Soy Un Joven.” Temo says, “A lot of people see [JOP] being like the biggest shit, so being next to him is awesome.” The LP also includes a reggaeton banger called “Palm Springs” featuring Karol G hit-maker Ovy on the Drums and Colombian singer Blessd. “That was unexpected to be honest, but it was another good opportunity for us,” Gemelo adds.
