Harry Styles Enlists John Wilson for Documentary About Madison Square Garden Residency

Harry Styles has enlisted filmmaker John Wilson to make a documentary about the singer’s current Madison Square Garden residency.

In recent days, photos of Wilson — the offbeat documentarian behind his own How To With John Wilson HBO series and The History of Concrete — trailing Styles with camera in hand emerged on social media, leading fans to wonder if the two were collaborating on some sort of project.

Variety has confirmed that the project in question is a documentary about Styles’ Together, Together 30-show residency at MSG, which started in August — when Wilson began filming — and runs through October 31.

Not a traditional documentarian, Wilson’s Styles film will feature “a hybrid of live performances and a glimpse into Styles’ world,” Variety reported, adding that Wilson will dig deep into the residency with “authentic human stories of everyone involved in the tour —from the singer and his fans to countless others behind the scenes.”

Universal Pictures Content Group, Peanut World Pictures and Styles are producing the documentary, with a theatrical release potentially in the works.

In the grand tradition of Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz and Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense, Wilson is the latest high-profile filmmaker to helm a musician’s concert film in recent months: David Byrne recruited The Brutalist director Brady Corbet to film his Baltimore concert in 70mm, and Cameron Winter’s Carnegie Hall concert was captured live by Paul Thomas Anderson (with help from Benny Safdie).
